I am a 42 year old female who is very warm all of the time, due to my nature and the medications that I am taking for my health. As a result, I don't sleep - at all - due to being hot all of the time. I have tried so many different products in order to try to keep myself cool at night (including various cooling sheets, tempurature-controlling mattress pads, the new Sleep Number Dual Temp Mattress pad, etc), including the purchase of this mattress pad.

A few things to mention...the quality of this product is very good. It comes folded up and you simply unfold it and put it on your bed just like any regular mattress pad. It is a bit heavy - without looking this up in the product details, I would say that it's close to 10 pounds when folded up. But, I was able to carry it without any issues.

Part of the mattress pad unzips to come apart so that you can wash it, if you like. The rest of it is made of this cooling gel that is across the majority of the surface where you would lay while in your bed. Note: The cooling gel does not cover the entire surface! It does not come up to the part where your pillow would lay, for obvious reasons (you don't need it up there since your head is laying on a pillow).

The gel itself is only about 1/2 inch thick. The design is very good, as it is evenly distributed across and doesn't pool or gather unevenly into the cells. The coolness is created due to the gel and chemicals, I suppose - not quite sure how or why it works, but it works well.

When you first lay down on it, it's very cold. It gradually starts to warm up. I found that I had a good 4 hours of cooling until it got too warm. This is the best that I have seen in these products, as most won't last one or two hours before getting too warm to use. But, once it's warm, you have to move to another area for the rest of the night in order for it to cool down again. Again, this is normal for this type of product.

In terms of comfort, this was not too uncomfortable for me. But, since I typically sleep on a soft mattress, this definitely made it feel like a firmer mattress just due to the design.

My reasons for not giving it 5 stars...the product has a smell to it, similar to a new Memory Foam mattress. This typically goes away after a week or two, but you need to be aware of this. Also, although it cooled great for those 4 hours, it got very warm after that time, requiring me to move to the other side of the bed or actually take off the mattress pad. For those who only need the cooling effect to fall asleep, this may not be an issue. But, since I am hot all of the time, this was a problem for me. Probably not realistic for me to expect this type of product to stay cool for 8 hours so, really not the fault of the product, just with my own expectations.

Overall, I feel that this is a high-quality product and would not hesitate to recommend it.
